School Holiday Word Problem Workshop
Primary 3 – Primary 6
PSLE Mathematics (based on MOE syllabus)
Word problems remain one of the main reasons students lose marks in Mathematics.
Many students understand concepts but struggle to analyse questions or decide how to begin solving problem sums.
This workshop focuses on mastering the Model Method, a key problem-solving approach used in Singapore Mathematics, helping students solve word problems with clarity and confidence.
Why Join This Workshop?
This programme provides an ideal opportunity for students to strengthen their foundation and improve problem-solving skills.
With focused guidance, students can develop essential strategies that are often difficult to master during regular lessons.
Students who attend often:
-
Gain confidence in word problems
-
Reduce common mistakes
-
Improve accuracy in assessments
-
Approach Mathematics with greater confidence
Master the Model Method
The Model Method (Bar Modelling) is a core strategy taught in Singapore schools to help students visualise relationships in word problems before solving.
By representing quantities using bar models, students learn to understand problems logically instead of relying on guesswork.
This approach strengthens mathematical thinking and prepares students for upper primary problem solving and algebra.
Model Method Techniques Covered
Students will learn how to apply commonly tested Model Method concepts:
Total and Parts
Understanding how quantities combine to form a total.
Difference Model
Comparing quantities to determine how much more or less.
Equal Units and Grouping
Solving problems involving equal groups and relationships.
Constant Concept
Identifying values that remain unchanged in transfer or comparison questions.
Before and After Situations
Visualising increase, decrease, and transfer problems clearly.
Multi-Step Problem Solving
Combining models to tackle higher-order and unusual questions.
What Makes This Workshop Effective
Structured Problem-Solving Approach
Students learn clear and repeatable strategies.
Small Group Guidance
Closer attention ensures active participation and support.
Immediate Feedback
Mistakes are corrected during class for stronger understanding.
Confidence Building
Students learn how to start and solve problems independently.
Suitable For Students Who
-
Struggle with word problems
-
Are unsure how to begin problem sums
-
Lose marks despite understanding concepts
-
Wish to improve confidence and accuracy

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this workshop, students will be able to:
✔ Break down word problems with ease
Identify what is given, what is required, and the right operations to solve the problem.
✔ Translate words into maths reasoning
Recognise key terms and understand how to approach each problem logically.
✔ Apply the Model Method independently
Organise information visually and solve problems step by step.
✔ Solve multi-step problems systematically
Approach complex questions confidently without feeling overwhelmed.
✔ Minimise mistakes and boost confidence
Work more accurately, think clearly, and tackle word problems with less stress.
